The FOT is part of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC). It is the supervisory authority responsible for public transport in Switzerland (railways, cableways, ships, trams and buses). Freight transport also falls within the FOT’s remit. The FOT is responsible for safety, finance and infrastructure as well as the legal and political frameworks of public and freight transport. Rail infrastructure has a certain influence on Baukultur as well.
